Weather Outlook - August 25, 2016

Last week temperatures ranged from near normal to more than 4 degrees above normal in parts of western and southeastern New York. Precipitation ranged from ¼ inch in parts of western New York to more than 4.5 inches in parts of eastern Long Island. Base 50 growing degree-days ranged from less than 80 in the Adirondacks to more than 160 in parts of southeastern New York. Read more

Help locate Johnsongrass populations in NY State

Professor Toni DiTommaso is working on a nation-wide research project assessing the distribution and genetic diversity of the invasive perennial weed, Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense). Currently, NY State is at the geographic northern-most limit of its range, but it is expected to increase in abundance in the state over the coming decades. Read more

The Drought Monitor: There has been a slight expansion of severe drought in central NY and moderate drought in the Hudson Valley. U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) rating topsoil moisture at least half short to very short on July 24 New York (54%). Drought was also apparent in low streamflows, particularly across western New York.  Buffalo, New York, received 1.80 inches of rain during the first 26 days of July, 68% of normal, following its driest April-June period since 1941.  Buffalo’s precipitation totaled just 4.42 inches (44% of normal) in April-June 2016. Alfalfa-Meadow Fescue Mixtures - Something to Consider

Meadow fescue is grown extensively in Canada and Europe, but dropped out of use in the USA decades ago primarily due to reduced yield and disease susceptibility, compared to other grasses. Primarily grown for pasture use, meadow fescue has considerable potential in mixture with alfalfa. Alfalfa-grass mixtures are as high or higher yielding than pure alfalfa, and have been shown to be an excellent forage for lactating dairy cattle. Read more

The Drought Monitor: For the last 30 days, precipitation is below 25 percent of normal. Stream flows at all levels (1-, 7-, 14-, and 28-day) are reaching into the tenth percentiles. Moderate to Severe drought (D1-D2) was expanded to cover these high impact areas in western NY. New York issued the first statewide drought watch since 2002. Read more
